The Last Jedi burned a lot of bridges in terms of setting up story threads for the final movie, but Kylo is going to be the final boss seemed like the one plot point it was genuinely committed to building toward. And personally speaking, I was actually pretty excited by the idea. Making the Emperor character this conflicted and nuanced villain who we'd spent an entire trilogy getting to know, rather than just a cartoonishly evil monster who barely shows up until the final film, seemed like a novel and interesting direction to take a Star Wars movie in. The fact that we'd seen this character's rise to power, seen him already turn away from all these different opportunities for redemption, would've added an entirely different complexion to the final showdown than in either of the previous trilogies. And it should go without saying that I would've absolutely loved to see what an actor of Adam Driver's caliber could do with a character like that. I was utterly disappointed when, only a few minutes into The Rise of Skywalker, Palpatine had returned and Kylo had already been reduced to nothing more than a henchman again. Not just because the storyline itself was dumb, but because of all the potential for a more interesting storyline that had been wilfully squandered for the sake of bringing back a villain people recognize.
